DTF Printing Canada — Questions We Get Every Week
Straight answers to the questions we get most often about DTF transfer printing in Canada. If yours isn’t here, send us the details and we’ll reply the same business day.
Can I order just one DTF transfer, or is there a minimum?
No minimum — you can order a single transfer, a gang sheet, or thousands. That flexibility is one of DTF’s biggest advantages over screen printing, which needs higher quantities to make economic sense. Great for one-offs, samples, short runs, and individual names/numbers.
Can I order bare DTF transfers (gang sheets) without decoration?
Yes. If you’re a print shop, reseller, or just want to press transfers yourself, our sister brand DTF Vancouver sells gang-sheet DTF transfers shipped across Canada. Dad’s Printing handles full-service decoration (we press the transfers onto your apparel); DTF Vancouver handles supply-only gang sheets. Pick whichever fits your workflow.
What fabrics can DTF print on?
Almost anything — 100% cotton, polyester, nylon, spandex, fleece, canvas, denim, and blends all work. Unlike sublimation (polyester-only) or DTG (cotton-preferred), DTF doesn’t care about fibre content. The heat-pressed adhesive bonds to most fabric surfaces.
Hot peel or cold peel — which DTF film do you use and why?
We use cold-peel film on most jobs because it produces a softer, matte finish with better edge detail. Hot-peel is faster for bulk production but can leave a shinier, more plasticy look. We’ll use whichever matches your desired finish.
How durable are DTF transfers? Will they crack after washing?
A properly pressed DTF transfer survives 40–60+ wash cycles without visible cracking when washed inside-out in cold water. Premature cracking usually means the press temp/pressure was off during application, not a flaw in DTF itself. We calibrate every press job to the adhesive spec.
Do DTF prints work on stretchy fabrics like spandex, poly blends, or jerseys?
Yes — this is where DTF genuinely outperforms screen printing and DTG. The adhesive layer flexes with the fabric instead of cracking. Ideal for sublimated-style jerseys, leggings, performance tees, and anything with spandex.
How close to a Pantone colour can DTF get?
DTF uses a CMYK + white ink process, so we approximate Pantones rather than matching them exactly. We can get within ~90–95% of most brand colours, but true spot-ink Pantone matching only happens in screen printing. If exact Pantone is critical for a corporate job, we’ll flag it and recommend screen printing instead.
Do DTF transfers feel stiff or plasticy on the shirt?
Modern DTF has a noticeable soft hand — softer than heat transfer vinyl, softer than old plastisol transfers, but still detectable compared to dyed-in prints like sublimation. On a standard cotton tee it feels about the same as a well-printed screen print. It’s not invisible, but it’s not rubbery either.
When should I choose DTF instead of screen printing or DTG?
Choose DTF when you need: small quantities, full-colour photo-style artwork, prints on stretchy or synthetic fabrics, or a mix of garment types (tees + hoodies + bags) in one order. Screen printing wins at larger runs with 1–3 spot colours. DTG wins for soft-hand prints on 100% cotton at lower quantities.
What shouldn't I use DTF for?
Skip DTF if you need: a truly invisible “dyed-in” print (use sublimation on white poly), an ultra-soft plastisol-free hand on cotton (use water-based screen printing), exact Pantone matching for corporate branding, or all-over prints covering full panels. DTF is versatile but it’s not the right pick for every job — we’ll tell you when it isn’t.
